A Dachshund Wearing My Grandmother’s Kimono|The Story Behind KIMONO DOG

祖母の着物No.007とお揃いの深い緑色の小紋をまとったクリーム色のロングヘアード・ダックスフンド alo-wear

A kimono inherited from my grandmother has found a new life—as dachshund art.

The newest KIMONO DOG design was not created from an imaginary Japanese-inspired pattern.

It is based on a real kimono that belonged to my grandmother: a deep green silk komon decorated with multicolored flowers and leaves.

The kimono’s colors, patterns, obi, and red accessories have been reimagined as an outfit for a gentle cream long-haired dachshund.

This is more than a dog wearing a kimono.

It is a family memory transformed into art—and a new way to carry the beauty of Japanese kimono into the future.

The Real Kimono Behind the Design

This KIMONO DOG outfit is based on Grandmother’s Kimono Archive No.007, one of the authentic kimono preserved by alo in Japan.

The original piece is a silk komon kimono with a deep green background. Multicolored flowers and leaves are scattered across the fabric in shades of red, blue-green, cream, and other subtle colors.

Although the pattern contains many colors, the deep green background gives the kimono a calm and refined appearance.

The kimono is coordinated with an informal fukuro obi featuring a geometric design. A red obiage and obijime add definition and bring the colors of the entire outfit together.

From a Real Kimono to Dachshund Art

For KIMONO DOG, the original kimono pattern was carefully adapted to suit the distinctive shape of a dachshund.

The model is a cream long-haired dachshund with a gentle expression and a beautifully curled tail.

The deep green kimono is decorated with the same combination of multicolored flowers and leaves found on my grandmother’s kimono.

The geometric obi appears across the dachshund’s back, while the red details echo the original obiage and obijime.

The design is rendered in a soft watercolor style. The warm cream-colored fur, deep green fabric, delicate multicolored pattern, and red accents create a gentle but memorable contrast.

More Than a Japanese-Inspired Dog

Kimono dog illustrations and Japanese-inspired dog products can be found in many places.

What makes this KIMONO DOG different is that its story begins with a real kimono.

It begins with a garment chosen and treasured by my grandmother.

That kimono was photographed and documented as part of alo’s Grandmother’s Kimono Archive. Its colors and styling then became the foundation for this dachshund artwork.

The archive and the apparel collection are not separate projects. They are two ways of preserving the same story.

Preserving a kimono does not only mean keeping it safely in storage.

It can also mean documenting it through photographs and words.

Sharing its beauty with people who may never have the opportunity to wear a kimono.

And transforming its story into something that can become part of everyday life.

KIMONO DOG is alo’s way of carrying the memory of my grandmother’s kimono into the future.

Carrying a Kimono Memory into the Future

alo began with a wish to preserve the kimono my grandmother left behind.

As I continued documenting each piece, I began to wonder whether preservation could mean more than keeping a kimono in storage.

Could its colors be seen by people in other countries?

Could someone who has never worn a kimono still feel connected to its beauty?

Could a family memory become part of someone else’s everyday life?

The answer became KIMONO DOG.

A small cream dachshund dressed in a deep green kimono filled with flowers and leaves.

A real Japanese kimono, reimagined through dog art.

From kimono to apparel.

From Japan to the world.

Through KIMONO DOG, I hope the beauty my grandmother treasured will continue to travel, grow, and find new homes.
